Cook/Nutritionist Volunteer

Introduction

Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY) is a Bolivian NGO, made up of a team of committed Bolivian and international professionals and volunteers. Founded in 1992, CIWY was the pioneer of the environmental movement in Bolivia and is recognised nationally and internationally for founding Sanctuaries dedicated to the rehabilitation of wildlife. CIWY currently manages three Wildlife Rescue Centres: Parque Machia (Cochabamba), Parque Ambue Ari (Santa Cruz) and Parque Jacj Cuisi (Rurrernabaque, north of La Paz). Each Centre offers refuge to wild animals rescued from trafficking, offering them a better quality of life.

Description

The Cook/Nutritionist will work in the kitchen alongside the cooks, and work with the Administrator and volunteers in order to get jobs done. You will need to come up with creative ways to develop a predominantly vegetarian menu that is delicious and nutritional with limited resources. The position will be divided 50/50 between the responsibilities in the kitchen and an animal area.

Responsabilidades

• Develop a varied menu with local ingredients that is delicious and nutritionally balanced to feed the volunteers daily, while keeping the sanctuary’s budget in mind. Write the menu with detailed instructions in collaboration with the cooks.

• Work alongside the cooks and teach them how to prepare the new recipes. Be culturally sensitive and respectful at all times.

• Coordinate with the Administrator to make the necessary food purchases each week.

• Attend sanctuary meetings as directed by the Administrator or the Sanctuary President and maintain a good level of communication with them.

Monitor the conduct and performance of the cooks and all volunteers in the kitchen and report to the Administrator or Volunteer Coordinator for any cause for concern or performance related issues.

• Maintain the kitchen and food storage areas in clean and hygienic conditions, ensuring proper food handling procedures are followed.

• Work half the day caring for animals that are currently in the area you are assigned to.

Conditions

CIWY’s three Centres are located in remote areas of Bolivia and the standard of facilities varies. You will be living alongside a community of Bolivian and international staff and volunteers, all of whom work exceptionally hard on a day-to-day basis. You must be patient, adaptable and prepared to deal with difficult and often physically demanding conditions.

Work hours

Work will include cleaning cages and areas, feeding the animals, construction and volunteer training. The days start at around 7am until 6pm every day. You will have 1 day off every week and 1 week of vacation after every 6 months worked.

Accommodation

You will be housed at one of our Sanctuaries. Housing conditions are basic since most of our resources are invested in the animals. Ambue Ari has limited electricity to power the office, fridges and electronics charging stations only. There is limited mobile phone signal at specific points in the sanctuary, however only with the provider Entel. A well/borehole provides drinking water and the water for the showers is not heated. The toilets are ecological and do not use plumbing. Volunteers sleep in shared dorm rooms with bunk beds on straw mattresses. Rooms and bathrooms are shared. Sheets and mosquito nets are provided, but you should bring your own blanket or sleeping bag as it can get very cold at night.

Financial agreement

This position is for a minimum of 6 months. CIWY is able to provide you with three meals per day and accommodation; CIWY is not in a position to offer a salary.

Experience & skills required

The ideal candidate will have strong abilities in cooking/nutrition with the objective to improve the volunteer’s nutrition, and an interest in wildlife. You will need to be prepared to work in difficult and physically demanding conditions with limited resources. Candidates should be able to improvise and come up with ideas that will benefit the organisation. Candidates should also have at the minimum an advanced level of Spanish written and spoken (and preferably an intermediate level of English however this is not obligatory).
